Initiation among the Kikuyu

There are numerous cultural events in Kenya and Widescope Tours and Travel brings you a combination of these events and wildlife or ecotourism specials. To avoid cultural shock you are gradually exposed to the various cultural practices of different tribes in Kenya as you interact with the villagers on a day to day basis.

Most of these tours extend over a period of two to three weeks and by the conclusion of the safari you are considerably better informed about what males the local people tick, you have a better understanding of their lifestyles, the hardship and challenges they face from day to day and how they overcome these challenges.

Among the most popular cultural tourism events on Widescope Tours and Travel calendar are: -

  • Initiation among the Agikuyu and the Maasai
  • Weddings and marriage preparation among the Kikuyu, the Meru and Embu people of Kenya
  • Bull fighting in Western Kenya
  • Traditional Fishing among the Luo of Lake Victoria
  • Some cultural practices of the Miji Kenda at the Kenya Coast
Dancing on a National Day in Kenya

Apart from the above there are dances of various tribal groups and the reason for each dance is explained to the guests even as they are encouraged to take part in these dances and also to show the local dancers their traditional dancing styles. It is important to note that these tours are interactive and some contribution in story telling or dances or other activities are also expected from the visitor as each cultural group learns something from the other.

Fork Dancers in Kenya

Also of interest on the slopes of Mount Kenya are the Mau Mau Caves, the hideaway of the Freedom Fighters who fought the British colonial government forces in the nineteen fifties. The stories that are attached to these caves are recounted even as you visit them. This is an excellent outdoors trip that also explores fork lore and culture of the nearby Kikuyu Clans.

Most of the evenings are occupied with tales of the yester-years and also traditional dances and sometimes we are entertained to traditional food that has been hygienically prepared for consumption by the guests.

The traveler has the opportunity of mixing the cultural trip with either a beach stay or wildlife excursions. Please contact our offices for a tailor made itineraries that meets your requirements. Kindly note that these safaris are personalized and therefore added-value as our staff are constantly with you, helping you to participate and understand the local people.
